Purple Cow

One of my favorite books when I was little was a primer that my mom got from a garage sale. It was called "Sounds of Numbers" by Bill Martin, Jr. and my copy was from 1966. It was full of short stories and poems and wonderful illustrations. There were even three illustrations with no words, simply the title "Here's a Picture for Storytelling."
With stories such as "Three Little Dachshunds," "Ten Pennies for Candy" and "Where Is My Shoe" it was hard to pick a favorite. However, when choosing a favorite poem the choice was clear. It had to be the purple cow!

The Purple Cow
by Gelett Burgess

I never saw a Purple Cow,
I never hope to see one;
But I can tell you, anyhow,
I'd rather see than be one.
